Welcome to hkmonarogts.com, this site is dedicated to the build up of our 1969 HK GTS Monaro. This particular GTS Monaro is an original 186 GTS and is going to be built as a bathurst replica. The original motor and box are going to be kept and the only change from standard aside from the drive train will be black interior – original interior was blue.
The rear boot chrome panel and wheel arch moulds were repainted – we colour matched the red in the GTS badges to get the correct colour for these pieces.
The rear chrome piece is a tricky piece to paint correctly as the three centre lines that line up with the tail light chrome are to be left chrome.

After having a few problems with the initial paint, the car was sent back and the paint looked quite a bit better however the stripes were as wrong as they could possibly get.
After making a few measurements of the stripes (above image), we realised that the stripes were ~50mm to narrow. It looked as though they had taken the measurement of the thick stripe and used that as the overall width of the stripes.
So what to do – take it back to the same place or get someone new? Well we opted for someone new – if you can’t get a job done properly after the second time, then chances are you would not be able to get it done right ever.
Metal work was completed in roughly two months and from there the paint work began.
Seeing as we ended up acquiring a matching numbers GTS, we decided that the original plan of going Warwick Yellow would be tossed out the window and we’d try to keep with the originality of the car as much as possible. So white was chosen as the colour the Monaro would be painted.
The interior would still be changed to black (blue just looked terrible) and the 327 was still going in. When / if the time comes to sell the car, a change of interior colour and swapping out the drive train is a far cheaper option than repainting the car.
The first task at hand was to pull the car to pieces and send it off to the panel shop.
It took us 2 and a half days (two people) to completely dismantle the HK. Everything bar the doors and wheels were removed.
